Tips for Dog Training. |
Dog Training Tips
-
Awareness - teach your dog to be aware of her surroundings.
Teach her to get out of your way when walking towards her so that she
will become smarter if she happens to get out onto the road. Don't walk
over her or step aside, otherwise she will assume that others will
always look out for her and do the same. Teach her vigilant safety.
-
Commands - It is important that your dog
gets used to the same words for certain commands - a consistent
training language. Your dog should become very familiar to the
following commands (and of course responsive):
-
Heel
-
Sit
-
Stay
-
Down
-
No
-
Release
-
Consistency - Be consistent with your
expectations.
For example when toilet training your puppy you should
always take him to the same spot in the garden so that he eventually recognizes that this is the spot he should go to himself.
He will also recognize that this "surface" is an okay surface to soil.
Consistently reward your puppy when he sits but never reward him (or
encourage him with pats) when he jumps up on your legs. Otherwise your
visitors will struggle every time they come to visit.

House training - Puppies are reluctant to
soil their own area. So you can capitalize on this natural instinct.
By about six weeks of age you can start house training your puppy.
Simply find a spot in the garden that you want your puppy to use
each time and start taking him there after each meal and at periodic
times in between. Praise him each time he uses your designated spot.
-
Leader of the pack - dogs respect the leader. Your dog needs
to know that you are the "leader of the pack".
-
Puppy
School
- This is an excellent idea for new
puppies. It helps with initial training and with socializing your
puppy.
-
Reinforcement - Give
your commands clearly and then gently reinforce them. Try to give
your command once so that your dog doesn't get into the habit of
thinking he can respond after you have asked him to do something 10
times.
-
Short Bursts for Puppies
- Puppies have a short attention span so make each lesson just long
enough to keep their interest. As soon as they look tired or too
distracted, then it is time to conclude the current lesson and let
them have their next, much-needed sleep.
-
Start Early - Training should begin the
moment you take your puppy home (gentle training). Puppy School is
an excellent inclusion in your training schedule.
