At the risk of starting off with a cliched expression, it really is never too late to start. And what I’m talking about here is senior bloggers starting their own websites.
Blogging can be such an engrossing and rewarding activity. This goes for a hobby blog as much as it does for an income-producing blog. Mind you, most blogs that start out as a hobby usually transition further down the track into generating some form of income as well.
There is no shortage of retirees embarking on a blogging ‘career’ after leaving their full-time job. So are you in good company if the blogging idea is starting to tempt you.
And I’m not just talking about new retirees here. There are many like-minded seniors starting to blog in their sixties and beyond?
Impressive Bloggers Over 60
Let’s look at some of the stand-out bloggers who have impressed me.
When I first started this search, I found that there were many, many examples of people who had started a blog after the age of 50. But I had to dig a little deeper to find bloggers who were listed in the 60 plus age bracket.
I should mention, as an aside, I always look to see the date of the most recent blog article. This lets me know if I am reading an up-to-date site. I like to know that I can thus expect new and fresh articles appearing all the time.
Sixty and Me Blog
Margaret Manning runs a popular blog with a wide range of articles written by many different contributors.
The articles are intended to inspire like-minded women. Topics range from travel, money and health to mindset and beauty among others.
Having started her blog in 2017 (I believe). Margaret has succeeded in demonstrating the type of success that an over-sixty year old can achieve. She has certainly put to rest any sceptical comments that could have dissuaded a less positive-minded woman from even starting.
You only have to look at article comments, as well as the number of different authors, to see the extent to which her blog has encouraged interaction among a community of seniors.
Over Sixty Blog
Another great example is the Over Sixty blog. It loads quickly, font contrasts are sharp and it has an eye-catching design to say the least.
I was able to very quickly find what I was looking for.
The goal of this blog is nicely expressed on their About Us page:
“We’ve created OverSixty.com.au in the hope of bringing Australian seniors together in one place to share ideas, experiences and support each other through this exciting stage in life.”
In keeping with that goal you can find articles on travel, lifestyle, finances and much more.
Alternative Ageing Blog
Suzi Grant started her blog in 2014, originally targeting the over 50’s audience. Her blog has evolved over the years and of course now includes many articles for the over 60’s.
She writes with an upbeat, humorous and inspiring style and both informs as well as entertains.
A Boomer’s Life After 50 Blog
This site was created by Judy Freedman who can now write from the perspective of those over 60 as well.
She describes herself as a post-60 female baby boomer.
You need only read her story on the About page to be instantly impressed by her ‘blogging career’. And you know that you can expect informative, interesting and witty articles when you read her intro:
“My philosophy is to age gracefully, be optimistic about the future, and keep my chin up…so my neck stays forever wrinkle-free.”
This is one blog that I have bookmarked to come back to. I think Judy has achieved a site that abounds with quality articles. Any new blogger could learn much by ‘leafing’ through her content and observing how she approaches various topics.
You are Never Too Old to Start
I find that there are a number of impeding notions that hold seniors back. I guess you could call these notions beliefs. The ideas that get in the way of an over 60 year old from starting a blog would include:
- Isn’t it too late?
- Shouldn’t I be happy with being a grandparent?
- Who would want to read what I write?
- Won’t people think I am silly?
- I don’t know how to start anyway – I’m not technically minded.
Let’s dismiss those fears!!! And let me repeat:
You are never too old to start
So, if you are inclined to join the any other adventurous senior bloggers, it is good to keep in mind that a niche style blog has a better chance of success than a something for everyone type blog. The more focused your blog, the more chance it will have to appeal to a specific demographic. This makes it much easier to attract a following.
If you are already blogging in your senior years, let’s hear about it via the comments below.
